Instructions for helping someone else

Pregnancy with bleeding or severe pain

What to do

  1. Heavy bleeding, severe abdominal or shoulder pain, dizziness or fainting: call emergency services.
  2. Severe or sudden abdominal pain, even without bleeding: emergency help.
  3. Even light bleeding: urgently contact maternity care or a clinician.
  4. Report pregnancy weeks and symptoms. Have available maternity notes ready.
  5. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  6. Wait with someone if possible. Do not drive with heavy bleeding, severe pain or dizziness. Report worsening to the dispatcher. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
  7. Unresponsive with abnormal breathing: adult CPR and AED. Tell dispatcher about pregnancy. No side-lying compressions or abdominal manoeuvres on your own.

What to avoid

  1. Do not ignore light bleeding even without pain.
