What to do
- If the way out is safe, leave now. Shout “Fire!” and help people you meet on your way out. Close doors behind you and use the stairs.
- Before opening, feel the door with the back of your hand. If warm or smoke is on the other side, keep it closed: use another safe exit.
- Keep low if smoke is on your escape route. If smoke, heat or fire prevents safe passage, stop: use “Exit blocked”.
- From a safe place, call firefighters. Give the address and who is inside, with floor and room if known. Stay outside.
- Child/person needing assistance: accompany only along safe exit, no re-entry. Unable to escape: give exact location/mobility to rescue. No improvised rope/unsafe stair carrying.
What to avoid
- Do not go back for people, pets or belongings. Do not enter to search or fight the fire: tell firefighters.
- Do not use the lift or delay for belongings.
