Instructions for helping yourself

Smoke indoors

What to do

  1. If the way out is safe, leave now. Shout “Fire!” and help people you meet on your way out. Close doors behind you and use the stairs.
  2. Keep low if smoke is on your escape route. If smoke, heat or fire prevents safe passage, stop: use “Exit blocked”.
  3. From a safe place, call firefighters. Give the address and who is inside, with floor and room if known. Stay outside.
  4. After breathing smoke: breathing difficulty, hoarse voice, prolonged cough or confusion need urgent care. Tell emergency services.
  5. Symptoms can appear later. Get urgent care for new or worsening symptoms. Feeling better outside does not rule out injury.
  6. Child/person needing assistance: accompany only along safe exit, no re-entry. Unable to escape: give exact location/mobility to rescue. No improvised rope/unsafe stair carrying.

What to avoid

  1. Do not go back for people, pets or belongings. Do not enter to search or fight the fire: tell firefighters.
  2. Do not assume it is only a cough or that improvement means safety. Do not wait to worsen if warning signs are present.
