Instructions for helping someone else

Person trapped by fire or smoke

What to do

  1. If outside, stay outside. Call and report where trapped people are. Do not enter to rescue them.
  2. If trapped with the person, use these steps for both of you. Do not take them through an unsafe fire or smoke route.
  3. Exit blocked: move to a room away from fire and smoke, with a window if reachable without crossing danger. Close the door.
  4. Call now: “I am trapped”. Give address, floor, room, number of people and anyone unable to walk. Follow the dispatcher. Report worsening conditions.
  5. Cover door gaps and smoke entry points with cloth at hand. Do not delay calling to find materials.
  6. Signal from a reachable window with a light-colored cloth or flashlight. Stay in contact with the dispatcher.
  7. Child/person needing assistance: accompany only along safe exit, no re-entry. Unable to escape: give exact location/mobility to rescue. No improvised rope/unsafe stair carrying.
  8. Smoke at window: keep closed and move from entry if possible. No breaking glass or jumping. Signal without leaning outside. Opening/room change only when safe and guided. Report worsening.

What to avoid

  1. Do not open a warm door or go into smoke blocking the route. Follow firefighters’ instructions.
  2. Do not go back for people, pets or belongings. Do not enter to search or fight the fire: tell firefighters.
