What to do
- Approach only if safe. Immediate danger: summon rescue. Move only as necessary to save life.
- Possible neck or back injury: call emergency services.
- Ask them to keep their neck still in a comfortable position. Do not force it straight.
- Brace your arms and support sides of the head in the position found, ears free. Do not force it straight or make them walk.
- If unresponsive, keep the airway open with dispatcher help. Breathing and CPR take priority over keeping the neck still.
- If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
- Monitor response and breathing until responders arrive.
- Give location and injury. No phone/signal: ask another person to call safely. Do not wait for a collar or equipment before seeking help.
- Only if vomit/blood blocks breathing: with another helper, one supports head/neck while the other rolls the body together, keeping alignment. Tell dispatcher. Recheck breathing immediately.
What to avoid
- Do not force a position or improvise a neck collar.
