What to do
- Tongue/throat swelling, hoarse voice, breathing difficulty or collapse after possible allergy: treat as an emergency. Do not wait for hives.
- Lie down. For breathing difficulty, slowly raise the upper body with legs stretched out. Pregnancy: left side. Do not stand or walk.
- Use your adrenaline autoinjector now, as labelled. Ask someone to call while you use it. If alone, call immediately afterward.
- Apply to outer mid-thigh. Follow that autoinjector’s steps and hold time. Devices differ.
- If not improved after 5 minutes, use a second autoinjector if available. Tell the team when each was given.
- Even if better, wait for assistance and hospital assessment. Do not walk to the ambulance.
- Symptoms return: tell dispatcher now. At least5minutes since first autoinjector: use second available according to their plan. Do not stand even if improved.
- Accidental injection into finger/hand or wrong site: report it and get immediate medical care. Used device cannot give another dose. Get another for anaphylaxis without delaying help.
- Other prescribed device, for example nasal: follow its label and plan, not injection steps. Child: use their prescribed product. Do not select dose from age/weight yourself.
What to avoid
- Do not stand or walk, even if better. Bring the medicine to the person.
- Do not delay needed CPR to search for an autoinjector. Do not improvise adrenaline with an ampoule or syringe.
