Instructions for helping yourself

Adult choking

What to do

  1. If able to cough strongly, keep coughing. If unable to breathe/speak, signal at your throat for help.
  2. Alone: call now on speaker if able. Do not assume a silent call gives your location: seek help from anyone nearby.
  3. Non-pregnant adult: fist just above navel, other hand grasps it. Thrust sharply inward/upward. You can lean over a firm chair back.
  4. Do not thrust against sharp edges or elevated railings. If pregnant, do not thrust on your abdomen: seek someone nearby and follow the dispatcher.
  5. After abdominal or chest thrusts, get medical assessment even if the object comes out.
  6. Unable to reach the chest or position safely: call now and ask another helper. Loss of response: dispatcher-guided CPR. Do not improvise a solo lift.

What to avoid

  1. No blind finger sweeps. Remove only a visible, easily reached object.
Adult unresponsive and not breathing normally: CPR
