What to do
- Get help. If unable to cough effectively or breathe, call emergency services on speaker.
- If coughing strongly, let them cough and stay close.
- Support head and neck when turning baby. Do not shake or hang by the feet. Strong cough or crying/breathing returns: stop blows and watch.
- Sit. Baby face down on your forearm supported on your thigh. Support head and neck. Up to 5 blows between shoulder blades, checking each time.
- Keep the head lower than the chest, without pressing the throat.
- If unsuccessful, turn face up on your legs. Encircle the chest with both hands, thumbs on the lower half of the breastbone. Up to 5 sharp thrusts.
- While awake and still blocked, alternate up to 5 blows and up to 5 thrusts. Stop when strong cough or breathing returns.
- If unresponsive, start child CPR with 5 initial breaths. Open the CPR guide and follow the dispatcher.
- Even after the object comes out, get medical assessment after thrusts.
What to avoid
- No blind fingers. Remove only an easily grasped visible object.
- No abdominal thrusts in babies under 1 year.
