Child choking

What to do

  1. Get help. If unable to cough effectively or breathe, call emergency services on speaker.
  2. If coughing strongly, let them cough and stay close.
  3. Small child: kneel behind if needed. Support chest while leaning forward. From age1 use this guide. Under1 use baby guide.
  4. Awake but coughing ineffectively: lean the child forward. Give up to 5 blows between shoulder blades, checking after each.
  5. If the back blows do not work, stand behind the person. Place your fist between the navel and the ribs and hold it with your other hand. Give up to five sharp pulls inward and upward.
  6. While awake and still blocked, alternate up to 5 blows and up to 5 thrusts. Stop when strong cough or breathing returns.
  7. If unresponsive, start child CPR with 5 initial breaths. Open the CPR guide and follow the dispatcher.
  8. Even after the object comes out, get medical assessment after thrusts.

What to avoid

  1. No blind fingers. Remove only an easily grasped visible object.
