What to do
- If the baby is coming now or there is a strong urge to push, call an ambulance now. Use speakerphone.
- Use a comfortable, safe position. Lying on your left side is an option. Avoid lying flat on your back.
- If alone or bleeding, do not search around the house for supplies. Tell the dispatcher you are alone and follow guidance.
- Very heavy bleeding, dizziness or fainting after birth: alert emergency services immediately.
- Cord before baby: no touching or pushing back. If able, knees and elbows on floor, lean forward until help. Otherwise lie on your side and tell dispatcher.
- Report head, feet or cord emerging. No baby/cord pulling. If born, support close to prevent a fall. Report no breathing. Ask a safe person to help.
- Dizziness, faintness, severe pain or heavy bleeding: report now and stay lying. Say if alone. Do not drive or walk carrying baby to find help.
What to avoid
- Leave the umbilical cord alone: do not pull, tie or cut it.
- Do not shake or hit the baby. Do not suction with your mouth or insert objects.
- Do not bathe the newborn while awaiting help. Protect from draughts.
