Instructions for helping yourself

Chemical or pesticide spill

What to do

  1. If exposed: leave the area. Outside, move upwind if possible.
  2. If told to shelter indoors from an outside cloud: shut doors/windows, turn off ventilation and stay in the designated room.
  3. Pesticide on skin: remove contaminated clothing, wash with soap/water. Follow product medical directions.
  4. Get medical advice after exposure, even after cleaning.
  5. Away from the spill: remove contaminated clothes without passing over your face. If possible, isolate in two bags. Leave untouched. Keep out of shelter and ordinary rubbish.
  6. General skin contamination: gently wash with lukewarm water and soap for at least 2–3 minutes. Do not scrub. Burns or special substances: use the specific guide and dispatcher.
  7. Use clean clothes and keep warm. Child or dependent person: request protected cleaning help. Tell responders about exposure before approaching an ambulance or entering a hospital.

What to avoid

  1. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting or drink on your own.
