Instructions for helping someone else

Chemical burn

What to do

  1. Get medical help now. Protect yourself from the chemical. Use available gloves.
  2. Help only without contaminating yourself. Ordinary gloves do not protect against every chemical. Do not enter cloud/spill. Stuck clothing: do not tear skin. Remove only if easy and request urgent guidance.
  3. Carefully remove contaminated clothing. Gently brush off dry powder before wetting.
  4. Remove contaminated jewellery if easily removable. Keep the chemical off other people and body areas.
  5. Already available product-specific instructions: tell dispatcher and follow that guidance. Industrial/unknown product or possible water reaction: urgent expert advice. No improvised neutralizer/treatment.
  6. Rinse skin with plenty of cool/lukewarm running water for about an hour. Follow the dispatcher.
  7. Tell responders which product it was. Show any already available product-specific instructions.
  8. Breathing trouble, confusion or large exposure: emergency help now. Keep runoff off healthy skin/others. Warm unaffected areas. Report shivering. Do not delay cleaning for container or transport for timer.

What to avoid

  1. No creams or other chemicals to neutralise it.
  2. No cling film or burn gel over chemicals. Do not apply heat-burn instructions to corrosive exposure.
