Instructions for helping yourself

Person trapped or crushed by machinery

What to do

  1. Ask for help. Say what is pressing on you and how long, if known. Report breathing difficulty or numbness.
  2. Do not restart or move machinery to free yourself. Follow rescue instructions.
  3. Even if freed and feeling better, you need immediate hospital assessment.
  4. If there is no immediate danger, help the person stay still and comfortable. Do not force their body straight. Tell the dispatcher if they vomit, struggle to breathe, become weak or get worse. Stay with them. If safe, ask someone else to call or meet the rescue team.
  5. Release may cause heavy bleeding: prepare pressure help. Tourniquet only for actual/anticipated life-threatening limb bleeding, guided/competent. Not crush alone or delaying safe release.
  6. Unresponsive/abnormal breathing: age CPR if chest accessible and access safe. Trapped/inaccessible chest: tell dispatcher, urgent rescue. Do not crawl under load.

What to avoid

  1. Do not restart the machine or insert hands/tools. Even switched off, it can move or drop a load.
  2. Do not apply a tourniquet merely because of crushing. It is for life-threatening bleeding under the bleeding protocol.
