Instructions for helping someone else

Snakebite

What to do

  1. Snakebite: get medical care now. Do not wait for symptoms or try to decide whether it was venomous.
  2. Keep the person calm and still, with the bitten area unmoving. Arrange assisted transport. Avoid walking if help can carry them.
  3. Keep away from the snake. Do not catch it or take it to hospital.
  4. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  5. Remove nearby rings/jewellery and loosen clothing before swelling if easy. Support limb comfortably and still. No tight wrapping or forced position.
  6. Loose clean dry gauze if available. No ice, scrubbing or chemicals. Do not delay departure for cleaning/supplies. Specific cleaning/treatment: follow medical team.
  7. Vomiting, normal breathing, no injury: safely onto side. Unresponsive and abnormal breathing: age CPR, not left on side. Separate wound heavily bleeding: pressure and bleeding guide. No tourniquet to slow venom.
  8. Remote/no signal: ask another to find communication and safe transport now. Give location, time and symptoms. Nobody chases snake. Move only minimally if essential to leave danger, with help. No driving.
