What to do
- If approaching is safe and unresponsive, call now on speaker. Check normal breathing while connecting.
- Only with normal breathing and no accident/injury: recovery position. Gasps or abnormal breathing: CPR, not recovery position.
- Later pregnancy, normal breathing, no injury: prefer the left side. If breathing becomes abnormal: back onto the back and CPR, not continued side positioning.
- Adult or child from age1: kneel beside them. Near arm at right angle, palm up. Other hand back against near cheek, held there. Baby: use only the baby branch below.
- Bend the far knee, foot flat. Holding the hand at the cheek, pull that knee to roll them toward you. Set upper leg at a right angle.
- Gently tilt the head back and lift the chin to keep the airway open.
- Watch breathing continuously. If no longer normal, turn onto their back and start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
- Unresponsive child breathing effectively, no injury: keep airway open and watch continuously. Baby: head almost neutral, not far back or chin onto chest.
- Normally breathing baby, no injury: securely cradle with supported head slightly lower for drainage, mouth/nose free. Abnormal breathing: onto the back and open child CPR.
- Unable to roll or support safely: ask another helper and follow dispatcher advice to keep airway open. Stay with them. Do not force a manoeuvre.
What to avoid
- After accident/injury, do not use this manoeuvre routinely. Follow dispatcher to keep the airway open and move only as needed.
- Unresponsive: no food, drink or sugar in the mouth.
