What to do
- If heat makes you confused, uncoordinated or about to faint: get emergency help now. Tell someone where you are.
- Stop exertion. Sit or lie in a cool place. Ask someone to stay and help cool your skin.
- Do not drive. Even if cooling helps you feel better, await emergency assessment and follow telephone instructions.
- Child, baby or frail person: start skin cooling and request emergency advice. Do not immerse if unable to support safely and monitor breathing. Never leave alone in water.
What to avoid
- With suspected heatstroke, do not give food or drink. If confused or unable to swallow safely, nothing by mouth.
- Do not wait 30 minutes when heatstroke signs are already present. Do not leave the person alone.
