Instructions for helping someone else

Gunfire / armed person threatening

What to do

  1. If a weapons attack is underway: escape only by a safe route. Leave belongings.
  2. If unable to escape: seek solid protection, lock and block the door if possible. Move away from it.
  3. Silence sound and vibration. Stay quiet. Alert police when safe.
  4. Give location and where the attacker was seen. Only if safe, stop others entering.
  5. Once you are safe, ask someone you trust to stay with you, away from the attacker. Tell them where you are and whether you can move or speak. If danger returns, go to another safe place and report it. Do not wait to collect evidence.
  6. Help only when it is safe to approach. For heavy bleeding, press the wound with a clean cloth. Do not press on an eye, a dented skull or organs protruding from the abdomen. Press around an embedded object or exposed bone. For an open chest wound or bleeding that will not stop, open the bleeding guide. Do not search inside the wound for a bullet or other object.
  7. Police arrive: empty visible hands, follow directions, no sudden movement or running toward them. Injury blocks escape: report place/limitation from protection. Do not expose others.

What to avoid

  1. Do not approach to watch or film. Being out of sight does not guarantee protection from gunfire.
  2. Do not chase, confront or try to take the weapon.
