What to do
- Check danger to yourself before approaching. Do not enter smoke, gas, dangerous water or traffic.
- Heavy skin bleeding: clean cloth and pressure. Not eye, depressed skull or protruding organs. Around an embedded object. Open chest: specific guide. Have another person call.
- Speak loudly and gently touch a shoulder. If unresponsive, call emergency services now.
- While the call connects, assess normal breathing. Occasional gasps are not normal breathing.
- If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
- Unresponsive but breathing normally and no suspected injury: side-lying. For possible injury, minimise movement and get guidance to keep the airway open.
- If awake, ask how they feel and whether you may help. Do not test walking or painful movement.
- If safe, stay with them. Watch response/breathing and report changes to the dispatcher.
- No phone or connection: ask someone nearby to call from safety. Give location and what is happening. Do not wait for an automatic app alert.
- Possible injury: no routine turning. If vomit or blood blocks breathing, move enough to clear the airway, with another helper if available. Follow dispatcher guidance.
- Child/baby with abnormal breathing: child CPR guide. Newborn or under24hours: birth guide. Give known age. Do not delay help to establish it.
What to avoid
- Do not assume sleep or intoxication. If unresponsive, give no drink, food or oral medication.
