Instructions for helping someone else

Person swept away by a current

What to do

  1. Call rescue now. Say where the person is. Ask another person to call while you help from firm ground.
  2. Keep the person in sight without approaching an unsafe edge. If they disappear, report the last place you saw them.
  3. Do not enter the water. From firm ground, throw a lifebuoy or something that floats. Before pulling them closer, kneel or lie down so you do not fall in.
  4. From firm ground, point out help and encourage floating. Do not chase them into the current.
  5. After rescue to a safe place, open “Person drowning” for breathing checks and CPR if needed.

What to avoid

  1. Do not swim in to rescue without water-rescue training. Being a good swimmer does not remove the danger.
  2. Do not apply sea rip-current instructions to every river. Do not jump in to reach another person.
