Severe cold / possible hypothermia

What to do

  1. Cold with confusion, unusual speech or slow breathing: call emergency services.
  2. Cold/floppy/very sleepy baby or refusing feeds: emergency help now. Dry wrapping including head, face free. Unresponsive and abnormal breathing: open child CPR.
  3. Find shelter. Remove wet clothes. Cover with dry blankets, including the head.
  4. Put a blanket or clothing between them and cold ground. Handle carefully. Do not make them walk to warm up.
  5. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  6. Stay with them and talk. Report reduced response or abnormal breathing. They must not drive.
  7. Suitable warming pack and know its use: follow manufacturer, insulating skin from pack on chest/back/armpits, not limbs. Avoid burns. No safe product: blankets and emergency care.
  8. Fall/injury: avoid unnecessary movement. Breathing takes priority: dispatcher-guided open airway. Unresponsive, breathing normally, no injury: recovery-position guide.

What to avoid

  1. No hot bath or direct heat. Do not rub limbs or give alcohol.
