Instructions for helping yourself

Dependent person without essential support

What to do

  1. Contact your carer, emergency contact or health team. Say: “I am without the support I need”.
  2. Give your location, what you cannot do, and missing medicine, food, water or medical-equipment support.
  3. Do not try to stand or transfer without needed support. Report breathing difficulty or deterioration.
  4. Essential device failure or necessary treatment due now: contact the health team immediately. Immediate danger or deterioration: emergency help. Do not wait for replacement.
  5. No phone or signal: ask someone nearby to reach the health team safely. If the carer is ill too, report two people needing help.

What to avoid

  1. Do not lift or transfer using an unfamiliar technique. Request trained help.
  2. Do not change doses or adjust medical equipment yourself. If essential care fails, request urgent help.
  3. Do not force food or water if unable to swallow. Follow their plan and your training. Do not improvise feeding tubes, oxygen or dialysis.
