Dehydration / unable to drink

What to do

  1. Take small sips. For oral rehydration, follow packaging or ask a pharmacist.
  2. Get help if unable to drink or barely urinating.
  3. Confusion, marked sleepiness or breathlessness: emergency help. Do not drive.
  4. Baby with diarrhea, refusing feeds or fewer wet nappies: seek advice now. If feeding safely, offer usual breastfeeds and ask about milk/suitable solution. No homemade mix or improvised extra water.
  5. Oral solution: age-suitable product and exact packet water amount. Do not dilute formula. Prescribed fluid restriction: seek urgent individual advice. Do not force litres.

What to avoid

  1. Do not give fluids to an unresponsive person.
