What to do
- First check immediate danger: breathing difficulty, unresponsiveness or sudden deterioration need emergency help.
- If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
- Ask what support is missing and what they can do safely. Respect choices and communication needs.
- Contact the emergency-plan person or a trusted carer. Use available care instructions.
- If no support can meet essential needs, request the health team’s help. Report needs, medicines and equipment.
- If safe, stay until continued care is arranged. If they deteriorate, alert emergency services.
- Essential device failure or necessary treatment due now: contact the health team immediately. Immediate danger or deterioration: emergency help. Do not wait for replacement.
- No phone or signal: ask someone nearby to reach the health team safely. If the carer is ill too, report two people needing help.
What to avoid
- Do not lift or transfer using an unfamiliar technique. Request trained help.
- Do not change doses or adjust medical equipment yourself. If essential care fails, request urgent help.
- Do not force food or water if unable to swallow. Follow their plan and your training. Do not improvise feeding tubes, oxygen or dialysis.
