Instructions for helping someone else

Disoriented person / does not know their location

What to do

  1. New or sudden confusion: get immediate medical help. Do not assume dementia.
  2. Stay nearby. Say who you are and where you are, using short sentences.
  3. If disoriented, help contact a trusted person. Do not leave them alone somewhere unfamiliar.
  4. Note known medicines for responders if possible.
  5. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  6. No phone: ask someone nearby to call. Give your location. Choose a trusted contact. No need to publish photos or an address.
  7. Help without forcing return to someone. No safe contact or immediate danger: get professional help and stay if safe.

  1. Avoid many questions or restricting movement, except for immediate danger.
