Missing disoriented or vulnerable person

What to do

  1. Missing confused or vulnerable person: alert police immediately.
  2. Tell police: recent photo, clothes, last place/time, phone and medical risks.
  3. Contact familiar people and places without delaying the report. Record what you checked.
  4. If found, tell police and check whether medical help is needed.
  5. Record searches and reports. Leave belongings and messages unchanged. If you find a hazard, stay out and tell rescuers.
  6. If someone is available, have them wait at home in case of return. Tell police familiar places, including former ones. Do not enter hazardous water, roads or construction sites to search.
  7. When found: approach calmly, leave space, speak slowly. One question at a time. Offer to wait together in a safe public place and tell police.
  8. New or sudden confusion: get medical help now. Do not assume dementia. Avoid arguing or restraining. If unsafe, request support from a safe place.

What to avoid

  1. Do not wait 24 hours to alert police.
  2. On return, reassure. Avoid punishment or interrogation. Share with police information needed for search and protection.
