Instructions for helping someone else

Clothes or person on fire

What to do

  1. Tell them: do not run. Drop, cover your face and roll until flames stop.
  2. If unable to roll, help smother flames with a blanket without exposing yourself.
  3. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  4. Once flames are out: cool the burn with cool running water for 20 minutes. Get emergency help for large, deep or facial burns.
  5. Child/person needing assistance: accompany only along safe exit, no re-entry. Unable to escape: give exact location/mobility to rescue. No improvised rope/unsafe stair carrying.
  6. After fire out: cool burn only, keep rest warm. Do not cover breathing face or pull stuck clothes. Smoke/hoarseness/facial burn: emergency now. No20min delay to call/CPR.
