Fall injury

What to do

  1. Unable to get up or possible head/neck/back/hip injury: emergency help.
  2. Ask where it hurts without making them move.
  3. If awake: neck still and comfortable. Do not make them walk to test ability.
  4. If unresponsive: keep the airway open with the dispatcher. Breathing and CPR take priority over the neck.
  5. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  6. Stay and monitor response and breathing. Protect from cold or heat.
  7. Child after fall: changed behaviour, marked sleepiness or seizure needs urgent help. Under1year head swelling/bruise/large cut: emergency help. Do not lift to test.
  8. Immediate danger or blocked airway: only necessary movement, follow dispatcher. No unsafe solo transfer. Another calls while you help. Give location/access.
  9. No reachable phone: shout or tap wall/floor without straining injury. Cover with reachable items. With possible injury, avoid unnecessary rolling. Later ask assessment of fall cause.
