Instructions for helping someone else

Possible fracture or dislocation

What to do

  1. Exposed bone, suspected long arm/leg bone, pelvis/neck/back fracture or lost sensation: emergency help. Do not test movement to decide if broken.
  2. Without those signs, medical care is still needed. Support the injury without changing its comfortable position.
  3. Support gently above and below injury without straightening. Pad around it with soft clothing/blankets. No tight improvised splint. Unable to support safely: follow dispatcher.
  4. Open wound: cover with clean cloth. For bleeding, press around it, not on exposed bone.
  5. Remove rings or watches if easily removable. Report numbness or coldness.
  6. Pale, cold sweat, weak or less responsive: emergency help now. Keep warm in tolerated position, do not raise injured leg/hip. Watch response/breathing. No walking.
  7. Cold/numb or changed-colour hand/foot: report immediately. Support bandage too tight: loosen only that bandage. Never loosen a bleeding tourniquet. Do not drive. Request safe transport.
  8. Unresponsive: emergency call. Not breathing normally: age-specific CPR with dispatcher.

What to avoid

  1. Do not try to reset the bone or joint.
