Instructions for helping someone else

Dehydration / unable to drink

What to do

  1. Help only if approaching is safe. With gas, chemicals or violence, call from a safe place.
  2. Baby with fewer wet nappies or no tears: urgent advice. Hard to wake or breathing difficulty: emergency help now.
  3. Confusion, breathing difficulty or hard to wake: call emergency services.
  4. Awake and swallowing safely: small sips. Barely urinating or unable to drink: urgent care.
  5. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  6. Baby with diarrhea, refusing feeds or fewer wet nappies: seek advice now. If feeding safely, offer usual breastfeeds and ask about milk/suitable solution. No homemade mix or improvised extra water.
  7. Oral solution: age-suitable product and exact packet water amount. Do not dilute formula. Prescribed fluid restriction: seek urgent individual advice. Do not force litres.
