Heat exhaustion

What to do

  1. Confusion, seizure, collapse or breathlessness: emergency help now. Unable to cool or needing advice: seek help without waiting 30 minutes.
  2. Move to a cool place. Wet skin with cool water and fan.
  3. If awake and swallowing safely, offer water. Confusion or seizure: emergency help now.
  4. If still unwell after 30 minutes of cooling, call emergency services.
  5. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  6. Remove unnecessary clothing. Cloth-wrapped cold packs on neck or armpits may help. Stay and watch until better or help arrives.
  7. Baby: do not copy adult water/volumes. Request medical feeding/fluid advice. Prescribed fluid restriction: follow their plan and seek advice. Cool skin now. Do not force drinking.
