What to do
- Help only if approaching is safe. With gas, chemicals or violence, call from a safe place.
- Baby or child: difficult breathing, hard to wake or blue/grey/blotchy skin → emergency help now. Do not wait for high fever.
- Infection with confusion, unusual speech, fast breathing or blotchy skin: call emergency services.
- If awake, help them lie comfortably. If unable or unwilling, bring a chair. Do not force positioning. Watch for changes.
- Say a serious infection is possible. Have their medicines ready.
- If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
- Give location and symptoms. No phone or signal: ask someone to call from a safe place. Do not delay help to collect belongings.
- Baby: weak/continuous cry, no feeding, very cold or abnormal response: emergency help. Report pregnancy/recent birth or reduced immunity. Do not wait for a thermometer.
- Unable to explain symptoms: report changes from usual behaviour. Very unwell: get help even without every sign.
What to avoid
- Do not wait for every sign or a high fever.
