Instructions for helping someone else

Missing or lost child

What to do

  1. Alert police now. In a store/event, also alert staff and security.
  2. Without delaying the report: check home hiding places and vehicles, including trunks, only if safe.
  3. Tell police: recent photo, clothes, last place/time, phone and medical risks.
  4. If you find the child, stay with them somewhere safe. Police/staff must verify whoever collects them.
  5. If found, tell police and check whether medical help is needed.
  6. Record searches and reports. Leave belongings and messages unchanged. If you find a hazard, stay out and tell rescuers.
  7. Found child: stay in a safe visible place. Do not take them to your home or car. Tell police/staff. Knowing the child is not enough to collect them.
  8. Baby or child unable to speak: this guide is for their accompanying helper. Give age, needs and where found. Do not leave them alone to look for a carer.

What to avoid

  1. Do not leave in a car or go elsewhere with someone without checking with your carer.
