What to do
- If already harmed or about to act: call emergency services now. Give the location and say there is immediate danger.
- Ask calmly: “Are you thinking about suicide?” Listen without judgment. Take the answer seriously.
- Stay nearby if safe. Ask another trusted person to help. Do not promise to keep danger secret.
- If safe and without a struggle, help them move away from dangerous items or places. If you are threatened, keep your distance and tell emergency services.
- In Paraguay, 155 offers mental-health crisis support, including family advice. It is free and confidential, 24 hours. It does not replace an immediate-danger emergency call.
- If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
- When help arrives, support the handover to professionals. Keep in contact afterward and help follow the agreed safety plan.
- If far away, ask where they are and request emergency help for that place. Keep contact if possible. If disconnected, seek help without waiting for confirmation.
- Child or teenager: involve a safe adult not involved in harm. Fear of a carer: tell emergency/child-protection services. Do not leave them with someone threatening them.
What to avoid
- Do not blame, challenge or threaten. Do not forcefully take objects away.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs while getting help.
