Instructions for helping yourself

Violent assault

What to do

  1. Look for an exit and create distance. Reach a safe staffed place if possible.
  2. Report injuries and request medical help.
  3. Help only when it is safe to approach. For heavy bleeding, press the wound with a clean cloth. Do not press on an eye, a dented skull or organs protruding from the abdomen. Press around an embedded object or exposed bone. For an open chest wound or bleeding that will not stop, open the bleeding guide. Do not search inside the wound for a bullet or other object.
  4. Once you are safe, ask someone you trust to stay with you, away from the attacker. Tell them where you are and whether you can move or speak. If danger returns, go to another safe place and report it. Do not wait to collect evidence.
  5. Neck compression/suffocation: medical assessment now even no marks. Voice/swallow/breathing change, fainting/confusion: emergency now. No symptom waiting or neck massage.

What to avoid

  1. Do not chase, confront or try to take the weapon.
