Instructions for helping yourself

Child abuse or danger to a child

What to do

  1. Tell a safe adult uninvolved in the harm, such as a teacher. Ask them to stay with you.
  2. For child abuse, contact Fono Ayuda 147. For immediate danger, also request police and medical help.
  3. It is not your fault. You can ask for help even after threats to keep silent.
  4. Once you are safe, ask someone you trust to stay with you, away from the attacker. Tell them where you are and whether you can move or speak. If danger returns, go to another safe place and report it. Do not wait to collect evidence.
  5. Neck compression/suffocation: medical assessment now even no marks. Voice/swallow/breathing change, fainting/confusion: emergency now. No symptom waiting or neck massage.
  6. Stay with safe uninvolved adult. No confronting alleged abuser, questioning, intimate examination/photos. Injury/suffocation/pain: medical care. Explain whom you will ask for protection.

What to avoid

  1. Do not confront the person causing harm or promise to keep abuse secret.
