Instructions for helping someone else

Extreme community heat

What to do

  1. Confusion, seizures or breathing difficulty: emergency help now. Keep cooling.
  2. Move the person somewhere cool. Wet skin with cool water and fan.
  3. Check people living alone. Offer water only if awake and swallowing safely.
  4. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  5. Stay until better or help arrives. If worsening, call now and keep cooling. They must not drive.
  6. Power failure with life-sustaining device: emergency help now. Only manufacturer-approved backup. Request safe transport help. No wet plugs or flames near oxygen.
  7. Baby or prescribed fluid limit: request individual advice. No adult litres or improvised extra baby water. Cool skin now and follow medical plan. Do not change medicines.
  8. No cool place or unable to move: ask health/emergency services and trusted person for help. Give location and who needs assistance. Keep skin cooling while waiting. No walking in heat.

What to avoid

  1. In extreme heat, find a cooler place: do not rely on a fan alone. Do not change medicines yourself.
  2. With confusion or seizures, do not wait 30 minutes.
