What to do
- If you can still move away without exposure to the attacker, reach safety and call police.
- Child: if someone tries to take you and you can still escape, run towards help and shout that they are trying to take you.
- If already captive: avoid sudden movements and arguments. Do not announce that you recognise the captor.
- If already captive: contact help only without putting yourself in danger. Give your location if known.
- Once you are safe, ask someone you trust to stay with you, away from the attacker. Tell them where you are and whether you can move or speak. If danger returns, go to another safe place and report it. Do not wait to collect evidence.
- Contact police only if doing so does not increase the danger. Tell them the known location, vehicle, direction of travel and medical needs. Do not test tracking or an unverified silent contact method. If someone is watching the device, do not change settings that could expose you. Tell police when it is safe.
What to avoid
- Do not pursue or confront the captor. Do not enter to attempt a rescue.
- Once captive, do not attempt an improvised escape that exposes you to more danger.
