Instructions for helping someone else

Seizure

What to do

  1. Call for first/unknown history, 5 minutes duration, longer than usual or another seizure without recovery.
  2. Pregnancy, seizure in water, serious injury, trouble waking/breathing or diabetes with loss of consciousness: call now.
  3. Loosen tight neck clothing without restraint or forced movement. Put nothing in the mouth.
  4. Note start/end. Clear hazards and cushion the head. Move only for immediate danger.
  5. After jerking stops, check response/breathing. If unresponsive, call. Abnormal breathing: CPR. Normal breathing without trauma: side position.
  6. Rescue medicine: only their medical plan and if trained to use it. Do not improvise doses.
  7. Wheelchair: brakes on, belt/harness stays. Gently support/cushion head. Do not transfer out.
  8. Seizure in baby under6months: emergency help now. Not returning to usual state after episode: get help. Do not wait if breathing is abnormal or hard to wake.

What to avoid

  1. Do not restrain movements or put anything in the mouth. Do not attempt mouth-to-mouth during jerking.
  2. No food or drink until fully recovered and swallowing safely.
