Instructions for helping someone else

Possible poisoning by a product or medicine

What to do

  1. Help only if approaching is safe. With gas, chemicals or violence, call from a safe place.
  2. Possible poisoning: get immediate medical help, even before symptoms.
  3. If awake, keep talking. Monitor response and breathing until handover.
  4. Keep packaging if safe. Monitor response and breathing.
  5. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  6. If unresponsive and blood or vomit blocks breathing: carefully roll onto the side to drain. Recheck breathing. If abnormal, back onto the back and CPR.
  7. Give location and symptoms. No phone or signal: ask someone to call from a safe place. Do not delay help to collect belongings.
  8. Report possible swallowed/touched/inhaled substance and when. Age and amount if known. Do not taste or sniff it to identify it.
  9. Keep others, especially children, away without exposure. Do not collect vomit samples or enter to retrieve contaminated containers.
