Instructions for helping yourself

Person in a vehicle surrounded by water

What to do

  1. SINKING or water rushing in: do not wait to call or fill up. Unbuckle, open side window now, including electric. Release child restraints. Children out first, oldest to youngest, then you.
  2. If a dry way out is still available, move away before becoming trapped. Do not drive into water or cross a barrier.
  3. Already trapped in fast-moving water, with no rising water inside: stay in the vehicle and call rescue. Give location and number of people.
  4. If water starts rising inside, seek refuge on the vehicle roof. Do not wait for it to fill. Tell the dispatcher if able.
  5. Window stuck: available escape tool for tempered glass per instructions. Laminated/windscreen may not shatter. Try another accessible exit now. No wasting time on resistant glass or searching outside.
  6. Vehicle grounded on flooded road: if able to exit without falling in water, onto roof/signal/call. No wading. Already sinking: interior escape first. Do not wait on a sinking roof.

What to avoid

  1. Do not walk, swim or drive through floodwater, even if it looks shallow. Obey barriers. Holes, cables or damaged roads may be hidden under the water.
  2. Do not enter water to reach a person or vehicle. Call and help from firm ground only without endangering yourself.
