Extreme community cold

What to do

  1. Get into warm shelter. Replace wet clothes with dry layers.
  2. Get help. If fully awake and swallowing safely, have a warm non-alcoholic drink.
  3. Ask someone to stay. If confused or very sleepy, seek emergency help. Do not drive.
  4. Power failure with life-sustaining device: emergency help now. Only manufacturer-approved backup. Request safe transport help. No wet plugs or flames near oxygen.
  5. Healthy baby sleep: on back, own firm flat surface, no pillows or loose blankets. Suitable warm clothes, face free, no indoor hat. Do not fall asleep holding baby/in shared bed.
  6. Unable to stay warm or reach shelter: ask help now with location. Dry layers/ground insulation while waiting. Do not force a confused/frail person to walk or attempt unsafe solo transfer.

What to avoid

  1. No hot bath or rubbing arms/legs. No alcohol.
  2. No charcoal brazier, grill or generator inside a home or garage.
