Extreme community cold

What to do

  1. Confusion, slow speech or slow breathing in cold: emergency help now.
  2. Cold, unusually quiet, floppy baby or refusing feeds: medical help now. Do not wait to measure temperature.
  3. Move to shelter. Remove wet clothes and cover with dry clothes/blanket, including the head.
  4. Check older or isolated neighbours. Help them reach warm shelter.
  5. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  6. Stay, talk and watch response and breathing. They must not drive.
  7. Power failure with life-sustaining device: emergency help now. Only manufacturer-approved backup. Request safe transport help. No wet plugs or flames near oxygen.
  8. Healthy baby sleep: on back, own firm flat surface, no pillows or loose blankets. Suitable warm clothes, face free, no indoor hat. Do not fall asleep holding baby/in shared bed.
  9. Unable to stay warm or reach shelter: ask help now with location. Dry layers/ground insulation while waiting. Do not force a confused/frail person to walk or attempt unsafe solo transfer.

What to avoid

  1. No hot bath or rubbing arms/legs. No alcohol.
  2. No charcoal brazier, grill or generator inside a home or garage.
