Instructions for helping yourself

Severe hail

What to do

  1. Enter a sturdy building, away from windows and large halls.
  2. Outside: move to nearest shelter, shielding your head with arms or a bag. Avoid isolated trees and wires.
  3. In a car: stop safely, keep head and face away from glass and shield your head. For a tornado threat, use that guide.
  4. If injured or trapped, call. Say where you are and what prevents escape. Do not cross water or wires for help.
  5. If stopping the car, leave the traffic flow and avoid trees, wires and signs. Do not block the road.

What to avoid

  1. Do not wait under skylights or beside windows.
  2. A metal roof does not guarantee protection from large hail. Do not go out to inspect damage.
