Instructions for helping someone else

Possible tornado

What to do

  1. Enter a sturdy building. Use a basement or windowless interior room.
  2. Inside sturdy building: lowest accessible floor, windowless interior room. Shield head and body with arms, blanket or pillow.
  3. Warn: tents and lightweight sheds are unsafe shelter.
  4. No reachable building and flying debris: park out of traffic, keep belt fastened, head below windows and covered. The car remains dangerous.
  5. Injured or trapped people: call emergency services from safety. Report location, numbers and hazards.
  6. Outside, no reachable building/car: if a lower area away from traffic and water/flood risk is safely reachable, lie low and cover head. No flood-prone ditch or bridge. No option guarantees safety.
  7. Unable to get down floors or lie: no forced stairs/unsafe transfer. Reachable interior room away from windows. Shield head with arms/pillow and ask help. No lift.
  8. Afterward, stay out of damaged buildings/away from lines. Fire/flood/collapse: use that guide. No water-filled basement or unsafe route. Injured/trapped: tell rescue location.
  9. No safe route or unable to move: shield head/body where you are and request rescue with location when possible. No water/wire/debris crossing for uncertain shelter.

What to avoid

  1. Do not shelter under bridges or overpasses.
  2. Do not try to outrun a tornado by car. Without shelter, no option is safe for every location.
