Instructions for helping yourself

Possible dengue with warning signs

What to do

  1. Get help for these signs even after fever drops.
  2. Rest. If awake and swallowing safely, take sips. Caring for a baby: offer usual feeds if able. Ask medical advice, no improvised extra water.
  3. Lie comfortably or sit if that feels better. Ask someone to stay and report worsening.
  4. Give location and symptoms. No phone or signal: ask someone to call from a safe place. Do not delay help to collect belongings.
  5. Drowsiness, extreme weakness or bleeding: immediate care even if fever fell. No self-medication. Report existing illness and medicines.
  6. Very irritable child, severe pain, vomiting preventing drinks or difficult breathing: immediate care. Baby: report age. Do not force drinks or quantities.
  7. If your medical plan limits fluids, tell the team and ask advice. Do not force large amounts or change treatments yourself.
