What to do
- Help only if approaching is safe. With gas, chemicals or violence, call from a safe place.
- Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding or fast breathing: immediate medical care.
- Rest. Awake and swallowing safely: offer sips. Baby: usual feeds if able. Request individual medical advice, no improvised extra water.
- If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
- If awake, help them lie comfortably. If unable or unwilling, bring a chair. Do not force positioning. Watch for changes.
- Give location and symptoms. No phone or signal: ask someone to call from a safe place. Do not delay help to collect belongings.
- Drowsiness, extreme weakness or bleeding: immediate care even if fever fell. No self-medication. Report existing illness and medicines.
- Very irritable child, severe pain, vomiting preventing drinks or difficult breathing: immediate care. Baby: report age. Do not force drinks or quantities.
- If your medical plan limits fluids, tell the team and ask advice. Do not force large amounts or change treatments yourself.
What to avoid
- Do not take ibuprofen or aspirin for these symptoms: bleeding may increase.
