Instructions for helping someone else

Flooded basement

What to do

  1. Do not go into the flooded basement, even for belongings. Water can prevent doors opening and cause electrocution.
  2. Do not enter water or touch wet equipment or wires. Report sparks or buzzing. Move away by a dry, safe route.
  3. Call rescue from a dry place. Give address, basement access and the person’s location. Do not enter to search.
  4. Warn others not to go down. Help them move up only by a safe route, without crossing water.
  5. If there is no dry route, do not cross the water. Tell rescuers where you are, how many people are there, and whether anyone needs help moving, medical care or powered equipment. If you have no signal, ask someone else to find a connection only if they can leave safely. Signal with a cloth or light.
  6. Blocked door/rising water: report now. No forcing door against water or going down to pump/power board. Reach height only by safe access. No depth test.
