Instructions for helping yourself

River overflow

What to do

  1. Move away from riverbanks, streams and drainage channels. Do not wait beside the water to watch it rise.
  2. When water rises, move to higher ground now by a safe route. Do not cross flooded areas to get there.
  3. Follow official updates and evacuation instructions. If the route is already flooded, do not cross: report that you are stranded.
  4. If anyone cannot leave, call rescue. Give location, number of people, whether water is rising and anyone needing help to move.
  5. If there is no dry route, do not cross the water. Tell rescuers where you are, how many people are there, and whether anyone needs help moving, medical care or powered equipment. If you have no signal, ask someone else to find a connection only if they can leave safely. Signal with a cloth or light.
  6. Do not approach damaged bridge/levee/eroded bank to look. Alternative also flooded: accessible high point/report, no wading or water-covered bridge crossing.

What to avoid

  1. Do not walk, swim or drive through floodwater, even if it looks shallow. Obey barriers. Holes, cables or damaged roads may be hidden under the water.
  2. Keep away from wires and wet equipment. Do not enter water to disconnect electricity or touch a panel.
  3. Do not return until authorities say it is safe. Falling water does not guarantee a safe road or house.
