Instructions for helping someone else

Nearby thunderstorm

What to do

  1. Thunder? Enter a substantial enclosed building or closed metal-roof car.
  2. No nearby shelter: move away from heights, water and metal fences. Do not lie flat. No outdoor place is safe from lightning.
  3. Guide others to shelter only without exposing yourself.
  4. Stay inside at least 30 minutes after the last thunder.
  5. Injured or trapped people: call emergency services from safety. Report location, numbers and hazards.
  6. For help, use a mobile off its charger. Do not use a corded phone.
  7. Fire, rising water or collapse in shelter: use that hazard guide. 30 minutes does not mean all danger is over.

What to avoid

  1. No tree shelter. Indoors: avoid windows, plumbing and plugged-in equipment.
  2. Open porches, tents and motorcycles do not protect from lightning. Close car windows.
