Instructions for helping someone else

Household accident

What to do

  1. Check danger before approaching. If still touching electricity, do not touch them. Cut power only if safe.
  2. Unresponsive, abnormal breathing or severe bleeding: call emergency services now.
  3. Heavy bleeding: firm clean-cloth pressure, except eye, skull depression or protruding organs. Object/bone: around, not on it. Open chest or uncontrolled bleeding: bleeding guide now.
  4. Thermal burn: cool with cool running water for 20 minutes. Do not pull off stuck clothing.
  5. Large/deep burn, face/genital burn, or chemical/electric burn: urgent care. Do not drive yourself.
  6. After an electric shock, seek medical assessment even if you feel well.
  7. After a major fall or crush, minimise neck/back movement. Airway, breathing and CPR take priority.
  8. If unresponsive: call emergency services. If breathing is abnormal, start CPR with dispatcher guidance.
  9. Only a small wound after bleeding stops: rinse with clean water and cover. Deep or dirty wound: medical care.
  10. Stay with them if safe. Monitor response and breathing. Prevent chilling without overheating.
  11. If there is no immediate danger, help the person stay still and comfortable. Do not force their body straight. Tell the dispatcher if they vomit, struggle to breathe, become weak or get worse. Stay with them. If safe, ask someone else to call or meet the rescue team.
  12. Heat, chemical, electricity, poisoning or bite: use specific guide below. Burns: cool injured area only, keep rest warm. A child needs medical care.
